Yes, indeed, there is the wrong kind of saving, honey. I should know I am it’s victim.
A few months ago I bought an Elba gas range after almost a year of thinking it over and doing research-shopping. You see, I am the kind of person who would squeeze out the last life from almost anything I own. As long as any piece of home equipment no matter what its physical condition is would stay as part of my life until it decides to retire by itself. But, no, honey, I will not take part in its demise. My husband’s influence, really.
Anyway, in this occasion, though, I made an exemption. The other one still works but the hubby said it’s such an eyesore because rusts started to become a major part of its body. So with much cajoling I agreed to replace it. With one condition, though. We will list down every single function or feature and compare prices and that we would be willing to pay the price as long as it could do everything – bake, grill, fry, boil, etc. - you name it, the range must be able to do it. Plus, it should be powered both by gas and electricity to cover any eventualities.
After a lot of window-shopping and visits to showrooms we agreed to get the latest in the medium-priced Elba gas range series. Because we’re so after the best buy we even called the manufacturer to confirm its features!
So, after considering all the angles we finally agreed to the asking price – about Php20,000 or a little over US$400. We thought it was a good buy. Why not, it’s a sort of all-in one.
Well, it’s almos six months to the day we brought it home and the only part of it that’s seen activity so far is the range’s top. Only because we had to eat!!! The oven part where all my pre – buying considerations were actually focused on was never touched.
We paid top dollars to that one piece of cooking appliance whose main components – the features we actually paid for – we never use!
So want went wrong? It was, i guess, a case of an overkill. We thought we’d save if we buy an all-in-one but you see, I never was and probably never will be really fond of cooking. It should have been my main consideration. We could have gotten something basic for half the price. I would have had money for another trip somewhere really cool. So there…
