How to avoid living from paycheck to paycheck

November 24, 2008 · Leave a Comment

If we live each day aimlessly we’re like a lost person with nowhere to go.   How perfectly lovely it is to wake up every morning knowing that we’re living the life we’ve chosen for ourselves.

Let us find a way to live our life the way we wanted each and every day.  Let the way we spend our money allow us to enjoy our dream life not in the distant someday  but starting now.

From now on  let’s free ourselves, in all the ways we can, from just trying to stretch our money from payday to payday.   Instead let payday be the day we wait for so we could add some more to the money we save then we could enjoy our life anytime we want.

There is an adage that says “if there’s a will there’s a way”.

In the previous post we mentioned some of the reasons why most of us are having problems with making our hard-earned money lasts from paycheck to paycheck.

How about checking out the suggestions below on how to avoid living from paycheck to paycheck:

  1. Keep out of the shopping mall on payday and most days.   Go to the store only when it’s absolutely necessary  like when you need a new pair of stockings or when you need to do your weekly groceries or your baby runs out of her infant formula or diapers.
  2. Do not put your credit card in your wallet or anywhere in the bag.   Better yet cancel it.   Why spend money you haven’t earned?   Remember that if you’re using a credit card and you are paying only the minimum amount each month then you’re dancing your way to financial disaster.   I know how tempting it is is to swipe your way to new shoes and things but think of the financial catastrophe that could follow  with mismanaged credit.
  3. Bring lunch to work and save Php1000 monthly at the very least.   Avoid health hazards like sodas and junk foods and bring an apple, a couple of bananas or a slice of papaya or pineapple to work for your snack and drink lots of water.   In a year’s time you’ll possibly save Php12,000 or more enough for a budget 2N/3D stay in Boracay.
  4. Before buying anything new check your closet again.   If you are as “organized” as I am heaps of hardly worn clothing may be hiding beneath piles of blankets, pants, towels, pillowcases, etc.
  5. If you are planning to replace your old model cell phone think again.    What type of cell phone user are you?   Do you listen to music on your phone?   Take pics with it?   Browse the net?   Play games?   If you are a text/call user then why pay for features you are not going to use?
  6. Apply nos. 4 and 5 if you feel the itch of to buy anything new.

The money that you’ll save every end the month or the 15th and 30th pay period should go straight to your piggybank or your savings account.

If you have no debt and you are able to stretch your money from payday to payday and then some no matter how small you have in the bank- whether it’s a piggy or a real savings account you’d always have that positive feeling of being above water. Make it a habit – an unbreakable habit- and you’re on your way to being rich, Pinoy!
