I wrote that story about my friend’s visit a while back. Reading it again reminded me of how many of us are real unhappy at work. A lot perhaps wish they could leave the job for something better.
- Better pay
- Better fringe and benefits
- Better work condition
- Better boss
- Better colleagues
It may be true that the reasons we want to leave our present job are valid but due to a number of things we just can’t afford to pack up and hand in that resignation letter. So we go to work each day feeling burnt out and dissatisfied. This is a lose-lose situation for you and the company you work for. It is not only unfair to the company but much more to yourself.
My dear friend it’s not making you any good. That feeling of discontentment will will take away your self-confidence. It will put a damper in your spirit and will somehow affect your relationship with the people you work with. Worst you’ll bring home your unhappiness and make the people you love take part in your misery. See, it’s bad all around. Besides, you don’t want to get old and ugly when the lines of worry and displeasure start to appear around your face!
If you can’t leave your job right now learn to love it, or at least find a way to like it. Look closely at the people you share this work with and find the goodness in them, their funny side and the things that make them tick.
Find little things about your work that gives you pleasure or the part of it that inspires and challenges you. In the long run it’ll be good for yourself and everybody around, especially for your family. And if later you still find yourself wanting to look for greener pasture your attitude towards work and colleagues would not be forgotten. Who knows your path may cross again and much better opportunities may arise from that meeting.
My dear friend, don’t burn your bridges and try to leave your work a better place and you a better person.
